To celebrate international cappuccino day on 8th November, we present 8 little known facts about cappuccinos!

  1. 400 million cups of coffee a day

The United States is the world’s largest consumer of coffee, drinking a whopping 400 million cups per day!

2. The word “cappuccino” comes from order

Its Italian name comes from a long & pointed cowl, or cappuccino, meaning “hood” and worn by the capuchin friars, who brought the catholic religion back to Europe.

3. Cappuccinos are traditionally consumed once a day in Italy, the home of the people who live the longest!

Still to this very day, the daily consumption of cappuccinos serves as an institution in Italian culture.

4. Cappuccinos contain less milk than a latte!

This results in a stronger, espresso fuelled flavour and is believed to be healthier than a latte!

5. Kopi Luwak - the world’s most expensive!

Grown in Indonesia, this bean costs over £40 per cup! Indonesia exports this bean all over the world, although it is little seen in regular shops.

6. 1948 - First appearance

The word Cappuccino first appeared in English writing over 60 years ago! Since then, it has grown in popularity and is regularly consumed in Britain.

7. Cappuccino world championships exist… really!The competition is held annually in London and sees competitors from all over the world. The winners, however, are always almost Italian.

8. Luigi Bezzera saved the day in 1901

The inventor of the first espresso coffee machine, its very unlikely we’d have the cappuccinos we know today without him. Although it has its earlier origins, without this machine today’s cappuccinos would be nothing but frothy lattes!
